I’m not really into podcasts, but I’ve heard enough vague stuff about S-Town to make me curious about the story. Here is a spoiler-y article that raises some very valid points about the ethics of the reporting. It sounds super problematic, and now I definitely won’t be forcing myself to listen.
I definitely sympathize with people who worry about the ethics of consuming meat and using animal products. Factory farming is disgusting, and we do need to improve our systems for large-scale food production. But I would never go so far as to say that all animal-based foods and products should be banned.* The work performed by Natalie Cairns-Ratter of the Shetland Tannery, discussed in this interview by Kate Davies, is a wonderful example of the beautiful connectedness that comes from being appreciative and respectful while using every part of the animal.
*If anything we should just ban humans; I have an affinity for the goofy Voluntary Human Extinction Movement.
